  9. What kinds of sound effects are there? Are they loud and intense, or subtle and realistic? How do they support the genre of this scene?

Mixed Up Movie Trailers (Tech)

OVERVIEW: In this project, you will be taking footage from one movie trailer and re-editing it to make it seem like it's a completely different kind of movie.

DIRECTIONS: Please follow the steps below to complete this project:

  1. Understand what the word GENRE means: Genre is how we classify, or sort, media like books, movies, shows, video games, etc. We put them into categories like action, drama, thriller, comedy, horror, romance, etc.
  2. Watch this movie trailer to get an idea of how movie trailers are often put together:

  3. Next, watch the following re-edited movie trailers for examples of exactly what you should do for this project (notice how they all completely change the genre like: family film to thriller, etc.).

  4. Notice the repeating editing techniques used to change the genre: The text/titles, the changed music/sounds, the way the shots are put in different order, the way voices are put in different places, and the use of slow motion.
  5. Next, pick a movie trailer that you want to change. What is the original genre of this movie?
  6. Then decide what genre you want to change this movie trailer to (hint: changing it to the opposite genre will have the most effect, like comedy to horror).
  7. Now you will need to download your movie trailer so you can edit it. Please follow these steps to download:
    a. Copy the URL of the YouTube video of your movie trailer.
    b. Go to keepvid.com.
    c. Paste your YouTube URL in the blue URL box.
    d. Click the silver "download" button.
    e. If prompted to run a Java Applet, select either "Run" or "Always Allow" on the pop up window.
    f. Then you should see a list of green links load up. You'll want to RIGHT-CLICK on the "High Quality MP4" link and download that video to your Z: Drive. Do NOT download an FLV or a 3PG file! ONLY MP4!
  8. Once you have the video file in your Z: Drive you are ready to explore Adobe Premiere and start editing your trailer. Click here for video tutorials on Premiere.
  9. Don't be afraid to take your time with this. Don't expect to get it done quickly or easily. Be creative and have fun and WATCH THE TUTORIALS before you ask for editing help.
  10. Your trailer should be at least a minute and a half long (try and keep it under 3 minutes, though, because otherwise it'll become a short film) and should have a clear genre.
